South Korea’s parliament probes Jeju air crash that killed over hundred

(MENAFN) South Korea’s National Assembly has initiated an investigation into the Jeju Air flight crash last year that claimed 179 lives, as stated by reports on Monday.

An 18-member special parliamentary committee has been formed to conduct the inquiry, which is expected to last at least 40 days. The committee will examine possible causes of the accident, including a bird strike and potential mechanical faults in the aircraft.

Additionally, the panel will investigate whether any attempts were made to obscure details in the government’s prior investigation into the crash.

On December 29, nearly all passengers aboard a Jeju Air flight from Bangkok were killed when the plane made an emergency landing at Muan International Airport, overshot the runway, collided with a concrete barrier, and caught fire. Only two crew members survived the incident.

Family members of the victims have voiced concerns over the government’s investigation, questioning its transparency and credibility, and have called for an independent inquiry.
