US nuclear submarine arrives in Busan naval base for resupply
The vessel, identified as the USS Greeneville, is a Los Angeles–class attack submarine and arrived at the Busan base, which lies roughly 330 kilometers southeast of Seoul, according to official statements.
South Korea’s navy said the visit is intended to enhance bilateral military ties, noting that “The Navy plans to boost exchanges and cooperation between the navies of South Korea and the United States and strengthen our combined defense posture on the occasion of the USS Greeneville's entry.”
The USS Greeneville last called at a South Korean port in 2016, and this stop marks its fourth visit to the country.
This deployment is also the first appearance of a US nuclear-powered submarine in South Korea since President Lee Jae Myung took office in June. The visit follows a similar stop made about ten months ago, when the USS Alexandria, another submarine of the same class, arrived at the Busan base earlier this year for logistical purposes.
The submarine’s arrival has drawn criticism from North Korea, which has denounced the move as a disregard for its security concerns and warned that it is prepared to take all necessary measures to protect its national security, according to reports.
