South Korea says nuclear submarines strengthen alliance with US
Cho made the remarks during a breakfast meeting with US Undersecretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby. "Minister Cho, in particular, recalled that nuclear-powered submarine cooperation will contribute to the alliance (with the US) by strengthening South Korea's deterrence capabilities, calling for the need for concrete implementation steps through working-level talks," the ministry stated.
Colby praised South Korea’s dedication as a "model ally," emphasizing its leading role in defending the Korean Peninsula through the strengthening of its own defense capacities. He added that the US Department of War will actively ensure that critical agreements reached in summit talks are implemented quickly.
The discussions follow a trade deal signed last November, under which South Korea committed $150 billion in investments to the US shipbuilding industry. The agreement also outlined joint efforts in shipbuilding, artificial intelligence, and nuclear-powered submarines.
According to the South Korean Defense Ministry, the new US National Defense Strategy emphasizes Seoul’s ability to take a more "leading role" in the security of the Korean Peninsula, reflecting a stronger, more capable partnership with Washington.
