South Korea Plans Two New Nuclear Reactors
During a press briefing in Seoul, Climate Minister Kim Sung-whan stated that the administration will carry out the required steps to finalize the construction of two large-scale nuclear reactors between 2037 and 2038, as outlined in the "11th basic plan" established by the former government.
He emphasized that in order to lower carbon emissions within the energy sector, it is essential to curb electricity generation from coal and liquefied natural gas.
"Therefore, we need power system operations centered on renewable energy and nuclear power," he remarked.
Recent surveys commissioned by the government revealed that, on average, 80% of participants believe nuclear power is necessary, with 60% endorsing the plan for additional construction.
State-owned Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) is expected to initiate a bidding process soon to determine which cities or towns will host the two reactors by 2027.
According to the ministry, KHNP plans to secure approval from the nuclear safety regulator by 2031, aiming to complete construction between 2037 and 2038.
