South Korea Sees Increase in Employment Figures
The Ministry of Data and Statistics reported that 27,986,000 individuals aged 15 and above held employment in January—representing a 108,000-person increase, or 0.4 percent expansion, compared to the prior-year period. The upward trajectory has persisted since January 2025.
Senior citizens powered the nation's employment expansion. Workers aged 60 and above accounted for 141,000 new positions in January on an annual comparison basis, while those in their 30s and 50s contributed 101,000 and 45,000 additional jobs respectively.
Younger demographics experienced contraction. Employment among workers in their 20s plummeted by 199,000, while the 40-something cohort shed 3,000 positions.
Sectoral gains concentrated in three industries: health and social welfare services added 185,000 jobs, transportation and warehousing sectors created 71,000 positions, and arts, sports and leisure services generated 45,000 employment opportunities.
Manufacturing employment declined 23,000 positions in January year-over-year, marking the sector's 19th consecutive monthly contraction.
The jobless population swelled to 1,211,000 in January—a 128,000-person increase from the previous year. The unemployment rate climbed 0.4 percentage points to reach 4.1 percent.
