Honda to Pull Out of South Korea Car Market by End of 2026

(MENAFN) Japanese automotive giant Honda Motor announced Thursday it will halt passenger car sales in South Korea by late 2026, marking a significant retreat from one of Asia's most competitive auto markets — though its two-wheel operations will remain intact.

The Tokyo-based automaker said its Seoul-headquartered subsidiary, Honda Korea, will wind down automobile sales as part of a broader effort to adapt to rapidly shifting dynamics in both the South Korean and global car industries.

In a formal statement, Honda said the move followed an internal strategic review focused on reallocating corporate resources to reinforce the company's mid- to long-term competitive position.

Despite the exit, Honda pledged to honor its obligations to existing customers, confirming that after-sales services — including routine maintenance, parts availability, and warranty coverage — will continue uninterrupted for current vehicle owners.

The automaker confirmed that Honda Korea will pivot to motorcycles as its primary business in the country, with plans to grow that segment by broadening its product lineup and improving the overall customer experience.

Honda first established its motorcycle operations in South Korea in 2002 before entering the automobile market two years later in 2004 — a venture spanning over two decades that will now come to a close.

The announcement adds Honda to a growing list of foreign automakers reassessing their foothold in South Korea, where local manufacturers Hyundai and Kia command dominant market share.
