Seoul, Washington Begin Talks on Security, Economic Cooperation Deals

(MENAFN) South Korea and the United States launched formal negotiations in Seoul on Tuesday to move forward with major security and economic initiatives agreed upon during last year's summit between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and US President Donald Trump.

According to reports, the discussions represent the first working-level effort to implement the commitments outlined in a joint fact sheet adopted by the two allies following the summit.

Key issues under consideration include South Korea’s proposal to pursue nuclear-powered submarines, efforts to obtain uranium enrichment and spent-fuel reprocessing capabilities for peaceful civilian purposes, and the expansion of cooperation in the shipbuilding sector.

The agenda also includes Seoul’s commitment to invest $350 billion in the United States, a pledge linked to arrangements that would reduce US tariff rates on South Korean exports.

As stated by reports, senior officials from both countries are leading the negotiations, which are expected to establish a roadmap and timetable for future agreements.

Observers view the talks as an important measure of whether the two allies can successfully turn high-level summit commitments into concrete policies and projects after months of slow progress.
